DR LEON GOUWS
Specialist Consultant: Oncology

Dr Gouws is a Port Elizabethan by birth who migrated to Cape Town. He did both undergraduate and post graduate studies through the University of Stellenbosch and obtained his specialist degree in Radiation Oncology in 1990. He is the founder member of GVI Oncology which consists of seventeen oncologists working in six different units around the country.

He is responsible for the in-house academic program for the group, seeing to it that there are ongoing CME programs in all units, arranging the bi-annual meetings for all units affiliated with GVI Oncology around the country for their nursing oncology staff, therapy radiographers, medical physicists as well as the oncologists. These academic meetings are focused on updating both the treatment and quality control protocols on an ongoing basis.

He has been involved in SAMA fee committees for the past eleven years and is the past chairman of the South African Society of Clinical and Radiation Oncology. He has attended a number of managed care conferences and seminars in Oncology over the past 5 years in addition to attending numerous local and international conferences in clinical oncology.

He was the recipient of the SASRO registrar prize for the best presentation at the conference in 1987 and was invited to be the first traveling lecturer for the College of Radiation Oncology in 1998. In 1997 SASRO presented him with a special award for service to the oncology community in the private sector. He has given numerous talks on the economics in cancer as well as on the roles of radiation and chemotherapy in general and on the treatment of lung, colorectal and prostate cancer.

He is currently an active member of the European and American Societies of Radiation Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the International Society for the Study of Lung Cancer, in addition to being an active member of SASCRO and SAMA.
