MHS Team - Graham Hukins

DR GRAHAM HUKINS
Senior Partner & Director
BSc, MBBCh, MMed, MPraxMed, MCom (RAU), DPH, DOH, DTM&H.

After graduating with a BSc in Biochemistry, Graham Bertram Anthony Hukins realised that his academic and professional interests actually lay in medicine, and he went on to complete his MBBCh at the University of Pretoria. After spending some years in practice, he subsequently read, firstly, for his Masters in Family Practice, and then for his Masters Degree in Medicine.

Since 1980 Graham has been a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. He has had both urban and rural Family Practice experience and has also worked in the University clinics in Alexandra township and Soweto. During his period of specialization he spent time as a Registrar at the National Centre for Occupational Health, the Johannesburg Municipal Health Department, and the Epidemiological Section of the South African Department of National Health.

Graham has lectured on issues relating to quality health care and cost containment. He has authored publications on a number of health care delivery issues including, the Cost Effective Planning and Implementation of Occupational Health Services; Managed Health Care Options for South Africa; and The Role of Providers in Planning Cost Efficient Health Care. He gained many years of experience as a Medical Advisor to medical schemes, in which role he was first confronted by the challenges of providing quality health care delivery to cost-constrained populations of enrolled workers. It was also in this environment that he was first exposed to the managed health care paradigm, and specifically to the challenge of adapting this essentially North American model to the uniquely South African situation. He has published, inter alia, in the SA Medical Journal on these issues and on his particular insights into the provision of cost effective health care delivery. In 1997 he obtained a Masters Degree in Commerce from the Rand Afrikaans University.

He has advised the South African Academy of Family Practice and has represented the South African Medical and Dental Council at Disciplinary hearings.

Graham, together with David Boyce, is a founder member of Managed Healthcare Systems, the leading South African managed health care organisation. He has led MHS since its inception in the mid-1980’s and has been the prime mover behind the achievements of the Company in developing a truly South African model of health care in which health care practitioners partner medical schemes to success in providing cost effective, high quality patient care.

Graham is married to Jennifer and they share a passion for wildlife and for travel and have visited many – often remote - parts of the world.
